How To Join
We are always looking for new members to join our team! Whether you want to be a Firefighter, an EMT or even if you would like to just help out around the station as a Member, we have a spot for you!

Our department meets every Monday night at 6:30pm for our weekly training. If you would like more information feel free to stop by or give us a call at the station. Our business hours are Monday-Friday 8am-3pm.

Q: How much experience do I need in order to join?
A: None. Our department's roster ranges from highly certified people, to people just starting out who have no experience at all.

Q: What kind of training does it take to become a Firefighter?
A: In New Hampshire there are 2 different levels of firefighter training. There is Firefighter 1 for those of you who are just starting out, and Firefighter 2 for the people who have taken Firefighter 1 previously. The NH Fire Academy offers these courses several times throughout the year and in various ways, whether you choose to go to the Recruit School in Concord, NH Monday-Friday, or you would like to take night classes a couple times a week. For more information about these courses visit the NH Fire Academy at

Q: What are the steps to becoming a member?
A: First give us a call, or stop by the station and express your interest. You will have an opportunity to speak with the Chief about how you would like to volunteer. You will then be invited to see what kind of training we do so you can get a better idea of what we do. Next you will complete an application, a motor vehicle records check, and a criminal history background check. Once the background check is completed you will be an official member of our department!

Q: Will I have to pay for all of my gear and training?
A: No. Our department completely outfits its members with the proper equipment. We also strongly encourage that all of our members receive training from either the NH Fire Academy, or an EMT course. The department will pay for all of your basic training classes, as well as compensate you for your gas expenses.

Q: Do I get paid at all?
A: Yes! All of our members receive an annual check in July for their service to the town. The pay works on a point scale. Every member who attends an emergency call, or an official department training session will receive a point for their attendance. Each point is worth approximately $14. In addition to the points, each member receives an annual base pay. The base pay depends on your position on the department, and also your qualifications. For example, a Firefighter 2 has a higher base pay than a Firefighter 1, and a Firefighter/EMT has a higher base pay than a firefighter with no EMT certification. At the end of the fiscal year your points are added on to your base pay and your check is issued.

Q: How often will I be on duty or on call?
A: Members of our department are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You won't be required to attend every training session or emergency call, but it's encouraged you stay active in our department. We understand that you won't be able to respond to every emergency call, thats what volunteering is all about, you come when you can.

Q: Do I have to be a resident of New Castle to join?
A: No, some of our members live outside of New Castle.
