Safepath

The Safepath Committee is an advisory group to the Select Board. The primary focus of the Safepath Committee is:

  • To assist the Town in planning efforts related to traffic and pedestrian safety –identify those areas of opportunity or concern, and providing input on a long-term planning schedule
  • To provide external outreach including fund raising and public awareness - Grant research, donations, road race fees etc.
  • To assist the Town with applying consistent design and function across all project areas (wherever possible) - types of access and design (trail, path, sidewalk, shoulder paved - unpaved, etc.

Safepath update:

A visit is worth a thousand words.  Hopefully by now you’ve checked out the progress made  adjacent to New Castle  Recreation Center and Library and through the wooded area in front of the Commons.  Ben Holmes (see photo) and his team from Rye Beach Landscaping have made great progress, continuing to be thoughtful about minimizing removal of plantings and ledge as they create an esthetic path that is easy to navigate.  They have installed the drainage pipe needed to create a path over the wet culvert and have kept enough curves in the path through the woods to make it Interesting.  Several large boulders had to be removed, and Ben plans to strategically relocate them along the path.  Their flat surfaces make them ideal for people who might need a place to sit.  Ben estimates that paving will be completed by the end of September.  It’s going well!

Donations to Safepath….  There was a surge of donations these last couple of months, many in honor of David Borden. These donations keep us planning and designing future Safepath segments.  Thanks to all for your support.  Onward!
